A friend of mine just said a friend of his bought an E39 BMW 540i. He turbocharged it to 0.4 Bar of pressure (or 5.8 psi). And there's the thing. There was no room for the turbo, so they mounted it inside the rear bumper. Has anyone ever heard about this? I'm really curious about this rear mounted turbo on a front-engined car.
Also, he sent me this picture:
Converting, this makes around 460hp and 600lbft or 780nm torque.
Anyone else with the BS meter beeping?

in the 4th gen camaro/firebird cars a rear mount turbo is one of the easier ways to add forced induction because there is no room in the engine compartment with our some serious fab work

Rear mounted turbos are for cars with plenty of low end tq, but no top end power. You get a fair amount of Lag, but its worth it if you want some top end.
You can make serious power off the setup.
Me being not familiar with the car or engine, I can't side one way or the other.

Not a problem man, I've looked into rear mounted turbos as well.
Its understandable to be skeptical.

I've seen them on 350Zs, Firebirds, and Vettes. Never seen one on a BMW, but I wouldn't be shocked. I've heard the lag is a bitch, but I've never driven one so I can't comment from experience.

apparently it is getting more popular since extra room in engine bays is getting harder to find. I'd never heard of it until a couple months ago.

I can only imagine the amount of pressure required, and the lag for all of this to work. That's why I'm more skeptical about the figures than the setup.

These had a rear mounted turbo.
I would have thought there was plenty of room in an E39 engine bay for the turbo's to sit up front.

you'd eventually make as much power as a front mount but it would take some seconds for it to come in. seems like a ton of torque but the HP would be reasonable. A bmw guy would know better than I would though.

Laggy a bit but the power is there. Lots of piping but more room to let the heat out. Not ideal but it can be cheaper than super-custom manifolds where there isn't enough room!

Considering you need something like 12psi on an e39 M5 supercharger to hit 500hp-ish, BS, yup.

I have seen a rear mount on an S1000 but it was more of a "hey look what we can do!" kind of thing instead of performance.
